OSA TOURNAMENTS – BYES AND 75 POINTS

From: Trevor Martin

BYES AND 75 POINTS

Some people are feeling that a 75 point score being allocated to a team receiving a Bye is too High.
Based on the winning scores at the Coldwater tournament the average score in the Amateur event was 102.8 and in the Open event was 96.9.
Bye games were excluded from the calculation.
The 75 point allocation is for a 24 frame format.

based on those scores I think a bye at 75 is fair. It does not seem to be too high. The advantage of having a bye would be the rest period not the score.

I agree with you Rip. They also get the benefit of a win. That is most important. The bye/75 points isn’t meant to be an instant trip to the finals.

Assuming each team will only get one bye in the five games, then the score for that bye would be the average of their other four games, thus rewarding higher scoring teams.

I agree, John … in theory. To speed things up, the TD “sub-totals” the scores as the tournament progresses. This allows us to get the top 8 finishers within minutes at the end of the day. For each bye, the row would not be able to be sub-totaled. At the eight court facilities, this could be a third or more of the teams. It’s still better than getting beat in the second round and going home. 🙂

who picked 75 and what is the rationale, why not 90, why not 60, at least taking an average of a teams winning score has some rationale as it awards a high scoring team. A low scoring team also gets what it deserves. And who doesn’t mind waiting at the end of the day for the results, I would rather wait longer to insure the results are correct

Thanks Trevor for the information as I am sure everyone has a viewpoint on byes! Keep up the Great work!

I don’t have any problem with the 75 points due to your calculations from the Coldwater tournament it’s likely about the same as the other tournaments, curious to know if it would be about the same at most of them 🤔 Bob

I find that some facilities tend to score higher points than others. Courts that are difficult to kitchen tend to get higher scores. Remember, the team gets the “Win” with a bye. To increase the points so that they possibly end up with more points than a team that actually played and won is problematic too.
