Ontario Teams get great results at the Dieppe IP

Ontario teams did very well at the 2013 Inter-provincial Shuffleboard Tournament held in Dieppe NS July 22 – 26. The Ontario Shuffleboard Association entered four teams: Two teams of women (called Women’s Yellow and Women’s Green) and two teams of men (also differentiated using Yellow and Green in the team names).

The Ontario men took the top two places in the Men’s Division:
Men’s Gold: Ontario Green Team – John Jefferson; Jim Corbeil; Bob Nobels and Max Tate (team captain).
Men’s Silver: Tied between Ontario Yellow Team and Newfoundland/Labrador – Ont.: Carl Rogerson; Don Raymont; George Admiral, Bill Bryan (team captain).

Ontario women were also well represented in the Women’s Division:
Women’s Silver: Ontario Ladies Green Team –  Marlene Corbeil; Barbara Howard; Linda McRae and Ruth Tate (team captain).
Women’s Bronze was won by the President’s Select Team and is mentioned here because three of the four members were from Ontario: Myrna Bilton, Marjorie Taylor and Lois McCormack (team captain).

Every participant played 12 singles games (6 frames played on each colour), one game against a member of each of the other 12  teams (with separate divisions for men and women).  Results were accumulated to the teams’ total scores.

Congratulations to the winners!  Also, many many thanks to all the volunteers who made this event possible!

Nobel Tournament – Motel info. (Cruise date updated)

From Dick/Sonia Lubbelinkhof:

I have looked into hotels in Parry Sound … for accommodations when people come for the Provincial Tournament in September.  The two hotels that we would recommend are:

1.       Microtel Inn & Suites 705-746-2700

Cost is $ 139.00 per night less 10% for September 3 and 4, 2013.  They have reserved a block of 40 rooms for the Provincial Shuffleboard Tournament.  Deadline for this rate is August 4, 2013.

2.       Canada’s Best Value Inn & Suites
705-746-1500
Cost is $ 79.99 per night per couple for September 3 and 4, 2013.  They have reserved a block of 30 rooms and deadline for this rate is August 15, 2013.

Also, we have contacted a local cruise line that offers dinner cruises on Georgian Bay.  We have asked them about having a dinner cruise – CHANGED TO THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 5, 2013.  It is a 2.5 hour cruise.  The cost is $ 60.00 per person plus HST, bar and gratuities.  There is only room for 42 people on the dinner cruise.    Please advertise on the website that if they wish to purchase tickets for this cruise, they can contact the cruise company with a credit card number to reserve their seat.  There must be minimum of 20 tickets purchased in order for the dinner cruise to proceed.  The dinner will be Georgian Bay Whitefish.  You can learn more about the cruise on their website.  www.spiritofthesound.ca  .  Deadline for purchasing tickets is August 25, 2013.

Regarding the tournament, there will be lunch available.  Fifth wheel trailers and motor homes will be permitted onsite.  There is no hydro hookup available.  Washrooms for men and women are open 24 hours a day.  There are no shower facilities onsite.  It is in a quiet, residential neighbourhood.

The McDougall Recreation Centre is located north of Parry Sound, off Hwy 400 at Avro Arrow Road.  Once they have exited Hwy 400, turn left (west) to Nobel Road.  At the stop sign, turn left and the next road to the left is (or leads to) Hammel Avenue.  The McDougall Recreation Centre is on the next corner at 148 Hammel Avenue (North side). (These last few details were modified August 8, 2013. An additional post shows a map – click here.)

For any further information, please contact Dick Lubbelinkhof at 705-746-2682 or sonnylu2002@hotmail.com

Prayers for you all

OSA President’s message to fellow shufflers in Alberta –

Date: Sat, Jun 22, 2013 at 9:31 AM
Subject: Prayers for you all
To: Ken Wardley
Cc: Myrna & Rendall Bilton , Maureen Bryan

Dear Ken & Verena. We are so very sorry for all the destruction all of you are having. Can’t imagine what you will face in the days ahead, but we send our prayers that things will straighten out quickly. Water damage such as you have had is so devastating, one wonders where do you turn next. Take each day at a time is all one can do, and know you have friends all over the country praying for you. We will sure miss you in Dieppe, but you need to look after family and home first of course.

Bless all in the terrible situation.

Regards from OSA, President Rendall Bilton, Ontario.

Tournament Notes

Here are some things you should keep in mind if you play in a tournament sponsored by the OSA (Ontario Shuffleboard Association):

  1. There are separate tournament divisions for players ranked as “Expert” and “Amateur”. “Experts” may play only in the Open Division of a Tournament.
  2. Experts include any player who has gained 5 OSA Amateur points in Ontario, or is a Florida “State-Amateur” or Florida “Pro”.
All others are ranked as Amateurs, and may play in either Amateur or Open divisions (or both if not still playing in the Amateur on day-two).
  3. OSA Membership is required to compete in any OSA-sanctioned tournament. Fee (for individuals) is $ 5.00 and is good for the playing year (beginning October 1st). Pay at the first tournament entered.
  4. OSA Tournament Player Entry Fee: $10.00. Pay at each tournament entered. CNSA tournaments differ slightly.
  5. OSA Tournament Rules of play are the same as the CNSA (Canadian National Shuffleboard Association).  Click here to see the CNSA Rules.
  6. NOTE for 2023: Amateurs may be scheduled to play a Round Robin style tournament to complete the first day. The Amateur division will start on the 1st  day scheduled. If a two-day tournament is scheduled Amateurs will usually complete three rounds on day-1, and complete the final two to three rounds on the 2nd day. The Open division will start on the 2nd  day, finishing on the 3rd.  Any exceptions will be noted in the tournament schedule.
  7. Plan to arrive at the tournament on the correct day by 08:30 AM at the latest to give time to get an OSA membership if needed, and Register for the tournament. Both partners must be present in order to get a registration form (and pay the entry fees).

We shuffle from 9:00 AM to about noon on Tuesdays, playing  2 games of singles, break for free coffee, tea and cookies and then 2 games with partners. Members vary from experts to newbies and about 12 to 25 of us show up to shuffle each week. We have a 50-50 draw weekly – 50 cents per ticket to support our otherwise free coffee, tea and cookies. Membership is only $15 annually for our September to June playing season. We always have a lunch “Banquet” at the end of June (and if the budget permits it, at no extra cost to members!)

Continuing with the Shuffleboard Tips from Earl Ball …

We are fortunate that Earl has taken the trouble to put together a series of articles for winning at shuffleboard. They are posted on the International Shuffleboard Association website. There are more details below, but here but one example from Earl:

YOU’RE ABOUT TO LOSE!  WHAT DO YOU DO?

You’re opponent is about to win, but you have one shot left and a clear board.

Help – Beads damage carpet

Dear Friends in Shuffleboard,

This Ontario group is in danger of being shut out (they have 2 courts) by their new condo board and they are looking for more ideas from the Shuffling community.

The dilemma is described below (Mr. Maze and Mrs. Brock).  I answered them as best I could.  Their Board is not satisfied.

If anyone has another solution(s) please help or they risk losing their shuffling.

They are indeed using plastic beads, on roll our courts.

Thank you.  Marc

Marc Petruccelli – President

Comments: Our Condo has an indoor shuffleboard court which has been used  by rolling it out over the carpeting in a common area.  The beads escape from the court and end up on the rug.  Vacuuming gets some of the beads but not all and apparently there is concern of damage being done to the carpet as the leftover beads get ground into the fibres.

Is there some  kind of underpad or lining that could be used under the court and which could extend beyond the edges of the court, in order to prevent the beads  from getting on the carpet?  If we don’t come up with a solution fast we may have to give up our winter shuffleboard activities.  Thanks for your  help.   Mrs. Brock

My response to the first enquiry from Mrs. Brock above:

I empathize and understand the dilemma and I have a couple of thoughts to share.

If plastic beads are already being used then I may not have the answers you were looking for.  There is nothing specifically made for this situation.  That is, there is no shuffleboard related underpad or floor covering.

You may already have thought about buying some indoor/outdoor carpeting that you would lay around the perimeter?  I would suggest at least 3 feet out all the way around.  You would not have to lay it underneath the court, at least more than an inch all around.  This would keep the costs down for this carpeting.

It may simply be that the vacuum is not picking up all the beads and investing in a higher end piece would help.  I hope I do not sound rude by saying that.  It may be the cheapest solution.

Sent: Tuesday, October 02, 2012 10:58 AM    Subject: Glass Beads in Carpet

Good day, Marc;

I was recently in your store and warehouse to purchase some wax and other supplies for the rubber/vinyl indoor shuffleboard we use at our condo. Your own knowledge and that of your staff was very helpful.

I raised the subject of our issue with the plastic beads possibly getting into the carpet – I believe you had an earlier e-mail from one of our condo contacts, Donna Brock, on the matter.

You and I discussed alternatives and kicked around the use of alternative courts that did not require beads, plastic sheeting under and around the court to keep the beads off the carpet, a collection border of some type around the sheet, or, perhaps, a DYSON vacuum might do a better job.

Is it possible that you might post the problem into a forum somewhere and see if your one of your many contacts have a similar problem, and, even better, a viable solution?           Thanks, Marc,     Doug Maze

Changes to the OSA website

We added a page for the Hall of Fame. This is an exact copy of the one found in The Ontario Shuffler newsletter, but we though it deserved to be high-lighted on our menu. See Hall Of Fame on the black-bar menu, or this https://shuffleon.org/hall-of-fame/ will take you there.

We also changed the order of some of the items on the black-bar menu. Does it seem a little more logical now? You may make any comments you wish via the “Comment” button below

Changes to the OSA website.

We just added Partners, a new page for the Shuffle ON website(shuffleon.org). This page is to provide a list of Shufflers needing a Partner for any upcoming tournament. Look for Partners on the black-bar menu above, right next to Events and Results. If you want to “go online” and advertize for a partner, just email shuffleboardbill@gmail.com and let him know the tournament and whether you are an Amateur or an Expert. etc. There is more information about this on the Partners page – https://shuffleon.org/partner/

From Maureen Bryan
Fergus hosted an invitational fun tournament on Sept. 12/ 2012 with St. Mary’s as our guests. We filled 10 courts, 3 games in the morning, and 3 games in the afternoon , with lunch served between the sets, provided by Fergus.

Our Fergus club encouraged our newer members from our club to play in this tournament, as many have never played outside their own club or have had minimal exposure to tournament play. This was to promote the game we love and to give them confidence , that what they have learned, was good enough to go out of their comfort zone, and compete with others. Win or lose , they were sure to have fun and meet many other shuffle friends.

Our members said they had a great day and met up with some very talented shufflers, not realizing that most were well seasoned shufflers with years of experience , and some of them pros. Like they say, anyone can be beaten on any given day. Well our Fergus shufflers surprised themselves, with nervousness set aside , they played hard and won the tournament, 34.5 games to 25.5 games for St. Mary’s.

We just wanted them to have fun and meet our gracious friends from St. Mary’s. We are very proud of them and we are sure you will see them next year signing up for tournaments. We thank St. Mary’s for coming to our club, and they have invited us back next year to their club for a rematch. (or revenge)? Shuffle, what a great sport!

Maureen Bryan ( on behalf of the Fergus Club & pres. Rendall Bilton )

Tournament – “On The Road Again”

George challenges other clubs to have an inter-club tournament. 🙂 From: George OReilly
Date: 8 September, 2012 11:12:37 AM EDT
” ON THE ROAD AGAIN ”
Mr Peter Berg from the Nobel Shuffleboard club (Parry Sound) has sent out an invitation to the Coldwater and Fergus Clubs to a friendly “Mini Tournament ” .
It will take place on Wed. Sept. 19th. @ 9:30 a.m. Lorraine Pollock has gracefully give her time as Tournament Director.
There will be 14 courts available and the teams will be made up when they register. Nobel will be supplying the lunch.
Both the O.S.A. and C.N.S.A. mandates are to promote shuffleboard and what better way than to have inter-club competition !
I would encourage other members reading this letter to check with their club to see if they too could participate in such an adventure ! Regards

CNSA announces 2013 Interprovincial Tournament

Please note the attached email from CNSA President Myrna Bilton as issued through the OSA Secretary Maureen Bryan is GREAT NEWS! The 2013 Interprovincial (IP) Shuffleboard Tournament will be in Deieppe, New Brunswick!

Great expectations – It was in 2011 that the New Bruswick Shuffleboard Association and the City of Dieppe were hosts of the hugely successful 2011 ISA Singles Tournament. There is much on the CNSA website about that – Click on www.theshufflersnews.wordpress.org, then rest your mouse pointer over the menu item for Special Events, then click on ISA-2011-World Singles Dieppe NB. There will be more articles on this wonderful region of Canada and promoting the 2013 IP Tournament.

In the competition was between provincial teams, so to play, you had to apply to the applicable provincial association / organization or other contact. More to come on this.

Hi,Bill:
We just finished a fun day of Single Mingles in London Ontario. After talking to Rendall and Myrna Bilton as well as Ross Kirkpatrick, we decided it would be a good idea to have the placings posted. Hopefully we can get other clubs interested in holing a Single Mingles competition. Right now we only have Chatham and London in the southern area. Hubert Van Eerd is also going to be sending his results to you after Thursdays event. Hope this will help to motivate other clubs. Marlene

Additions to ShuffleON

We have largely completed the change-over to ShuffleON from the previous OSA website. The results of all this year’s tournaments have been included on the Events and Results page. The latest changes include three new pages of information available via the black-bar menu: Business (Minutes of OSA meetings etc.), Hall Of Fame, and History. Contents were moved over from the former website. Still to come: The Clubs page to be populated from the old site, and a page for Player Points to be added when the up-to-date stats are available.  Meanwhile the Home page is still where to look for the latest Ontario shuffleboard news

Don’t forget, you can be notified by email when any news is posted to the Home page – Just click the +Follow button found in the lower right corner of the screen, and follow a few simple instructions.

Cheers, Bill Boyes
