Maureen Corbeil to OSA HOF

Presented by Maureen Bryan June 14, 2022

Marlene Corbeil – 2022 OSA HOF

Marlene was introduced to shuffleboard in Frostproof, Florida in 2010. At first she wasn’t keen on the game but her husband Jim really liked it. After a few months playing in Florida and Ontario, Marlene began playing in tournaments.

In 2011 she was asked to play in the first interprovincial tournament , which was held in Innisfail, Alberta. Since then Marlene played in 3 other interprovincial tournaments, one in Dieppe in 2013, Goodrich in 2015, and Moose Jaw in 2017. She also was director for the one held in Ingersoll, in 2019 , but unfortunately on the day of play Marlene became very ill and we nearly lost her. With the grace of God and great doctors she fought back. She then was the director for the 6th Interprovincial, held in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, in 2021 , when things opened up somewhat after the lockdown with Covid-19.

In the meantime , Marlene also played , representing Canada, in 6 international shuffleboard tournaments which consisted travelling to st. Petersburg, Florida in 2013; Midland in 2014; Clearwater, Florida in 2015, where she placed in the top 15; St. Cloud, Florida in 2016, Brazil in 2017 were she placed in the top 4; and then High River, Alberta in 2018.

In 2014, Lorraine Pollock , tournament director at the time, approached Marlene, to see if she would take over being a tournament director. She thought since her husband wanted to play in the tournaments, she could be there still involved in the games. Lorraine stepped down and Marlene stepped into the position as tournament director of the OSA and CNSA tournaments from 2015-2021.
She has served on several board positions over the years, CNSA board of directors, OSA rules committee and Hall Of Fame chairperson , she also helped her husband , Jim when he was the CNSA president.

Marlene was president of Winter Haven, Florida Shuffleboard Club for 5 years. Working along side of the Winter Haven City, she managed to have 24 courts, resurfaced and painted. She then organized and directed Central District park amateur team championships , for 7 years. There were 15 parks entered in each tournament. Marlene was also curator for the Hall Of Fame in Winter Haven, Florida as well as director for the Hall Of Fame Classic Tournament for 6 years.

As well as directing tournaments , Marlene also ran monthly single mingles for Ingersoll, St Mary’s, and London’s shuffleboard clubs. She also ran the annual Apple Tournament for Southern Ontario .
Marlene has been a great inspiration for new players and has gone out of her way to teach and assist in any way she could.

Marlene is a very accomplished shuffler herself, and a caring and well respected ambassador for the game of shuffleboard, here at home , as well as abroad.

It is my privilege to introduce our friend and fellow shuffler, as she is inducted into the Ontario Shuffleboard Association , Hall Of Fame, Marlene Corbeil.

Presented by Maureen Bryan, secretary OSA. June 14-2022.

Ruth Tate

Ruth Tate was inducted into CNSA Hall Of Fame by Myrna Bilton, 2022 05 31, at the CNSA AGM in Ingersoll Ont. Myrna’s words follow:

It truly is a privilege and honour to nominate Ruth Tate to the Canadian National Shuffleboard Association, Hall of Fame in the Special Award category. Ruth and her husband Max started going to Sebring, Florida in January 1995. They joined the Sebring Recreation Club and were introduced to shuffleboard. They had 2 lessons and both were hooked to the sport we love. Ruth & Max were curlers, and found the strategy very similar.

I met Ruth in 2007 at the ISA Tournament in Midland. I was impressed with this lady…..she didn’t have long to talk but in our conversation I knew this was one active lady!! She was helping the tournament director Lorraine Pollock and was on the organizing committee for that event…

Happy 70th Anniversary to Carl and Ella Rogerson!

Carl and Ella Rogerson

The OSA would like to extend  congratulations and best wishes to President Carl Rogerson and his First Lady Ella, on their 70th wedding anniversary, April 19th, 2022.

About Carl and Ella as sent to us by their daughter, Sue Rogerson:

Carl and Ella Rogerson were married in Alliston, Ontario on April 19th 1952. At the time Carl was working on the railway and Mom was working the boats through the locks in Coldwater, ON.
Shortly after they were married they moved to MacTier, ON as Dad continued to work on the railway their first child was then born in Parry Sound, On. A short time later they moved to North Bay, ON where Dad continued to work on the railway.

In 1957 Carl bought his first home and opened his own business in the garage at the back of the home. That business was a repair business of acetylene torches and regulators. He stayed there for a number of years and then relocated into a large building where he then sold oxygen, acetylene, and all kinds of associated parts. That business was sold and he went into eighteen wheelers hauling all over North America, at one time he had at least 20 rigs in the fleet.

Over the 70 years of marriage they have raised six children: 3 boys and 3 girls. Unfortunately they just lost their youngest daughter in March. The rest of the family are doing well. They have 10 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Dad has spent the last 40 years in the sea-container business, selling, renting, delivering and to this day is still selling, renting and delivering containers. Thirty years ago they began to go to Florida in the winters and that is where he was introduced to the game of Shuffleboard reaching his Pro status.

Webmasters Note: Following several years of service on the OSA board, Carl was elected president in June 2018, a position he has held since. On the courts, Carl is well known for his white western hat and dapper curled moustache, AND for being a formidable opponent! (Great as a partner of course!).

Shufflin' Bill B's avatarCNSA Shuffleboard Canada

March 28 Gary Pipher sent – “Passing of a special person …

I have just been informed that our special caterer “Larry Lalonde ” passed away today.

He will always be remembered for the many special meals he prepared for the shuffleboard tournaments in Coldwater as well as the International tournaments that were held in Midland. “Great memories of a special guy”

Jim and Marlene Corbeil added –

It was a special time, when ever we went to the Coldwater tournaments everyone looked forward to Larry’s meals. He and his helpers, ( I don’t know if some of them were family or not) put up a great menu. And the same great meals and friendly smiles at Midland.

Larry was happy to see everyone enjoying his cooking and deserts. He was an extremely nice person to have known. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

As it is noted we have lost our long time tournament director, Marlene Corbeil, as she has retired from this position.
We are now looking to train new people for this position, and have someone that will do this for us. Please reply to me if you are interested, and I would like to see at least a few to help out . We would start out learning on a paper format, and we will arrange a class in early spring. Please don’t be afraid to try , we can’t run a tournament without a director. I hope I get lots of interest.

Thanks in advance,
Maureen Bryan, sec. OSA.

Thanks to Maureen from OSA

The OSA would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Marlene Corbeil for her years of work with the organization. As she has stepped down from her positions with the OSA , we wish her the best . We know she has given many years as our tournament director and other positions in the organization. She is now able to proceed with other endeavours and maybe even get to be a player. Her position will be hard to fill, but we can only try our best.

Good luck Marlene, from your friends of the OSA.

Regards Maureen Bryan, sec. OSA.

2022 OSA Sanctioned Tournaments – Corrected

Coldwater dates correction.

Note: All tournaments are played under ISA rules. Format is Doubles so you need a partner – No Partner? – See the Partner Needed page.. Amateurs may play in an Open tournament. Please see Tournament Notes and About OSA Tournaments.

Amateurs should plan for two to three days at our tournaments. ALSO you may play in both the Amateur AND the Open IF …:
Amateur tournaments start on a Tuesday (but not the Ingersoll CNSA), and if participation is high, finals have to be played on the next day. Tips for *Our* Game (Frame-games)

Almost ALL of our shuffleboard games in Ontario and Canada are commonly limited to short, 12 or 16 frames. Tournaments are played according to ISA rules which specify a game to be 16 frames. A different strategy is needed compared to the 75-point games in Florida etc. Take note that these tips, even if you NEVER play 75-po9int games, will help you WIN!

The following is fun information and tips, content originated by the great Lary Feris, are taken from the Zephyrhills Shuffleboard Club website – .

  • If you are playing yellow, it’s important to try to keep from getting behind by more than one score at the end of the 10th frame, so you can possibly win by scoring with your last two hammers.
  • If you are playing black, you should try to get out to a big lead with your first two hammers and try to maintain a two block lead or better through your last hammers (9th & 10th frames).
  • Because game points are recorded, tacking on score when you are safely ahead is preferred to clearing. Snuggling can be a good tactic for adding on score, especially when you have the hammer. Snuggling eights is a good choice with less chance of being “kitchened”.
(Ed. Note: It is unusual to record game points in Ontario. If you are ahead, don’t take the risk of losing by kitchening yourself with your last shot)
  • Covering ten-offs is also a good tactic in these short frame games, especially if you are behind and you need to get your opponent going in the wrong direction. At the very least it can kill a frame and possibly cause a lost hammer.

Ontario’s own, from Ingersoll, is inducted into CNSA Hall Of Fame – Presidents Category

Shufflin' Bill B's avatarCNSA Shuffleboard Canada

Jim Corbel became 3rd Vice President of the CNSA in 2010; he moved up through the vice presidents and became President in July of 2016, following Past President, Henry Strong.
In the years working with Jim, we’ve learned he is a good communicator, keeping everyone abreast with the goings on within the CNSA.
Jim has been involved in the planning of many tournaments in Canada, three CNSA Inter provincials: Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan 2017, Ingersoll, Ontario 2019 and here in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia 2021 and an ISA, in High River, Alberta in 2018 and now planning another ISA tournament for 2022 in Ingersoll/Woodstock, Ontario. Jim has definitely, been instrumental in promoting CNSA tournaments, from the east (Nova Scotia), central (Ontario) and the west Saskatchewan and Alberta. That is quite an achievement from 2016 to 2021!

Shufflin' Bill B's avatarCNSA Shuffleboard Canada

With my apologies, I must tell you that the previous post about a change for the date of the 2021 Iner-Provincial in Bridgewater NS was incorrect. This was due to a misunderstood email from CNSA president Jim Corbeil. Jim has just emphatically informed me that the date has not yet changed but there will be a CNSA decision about the date on March 28th.

Shufflin' Bill B's avatarCNSA Shuffleboard Canada

We are grateful to The Shuffler for recording this piece of shuffleboard history, as depicted in this excerpt from 2016 07 08.

– by stanistheman, based on an article in the Chatham Daily News

Alphonse and Phoebe Marchand were recognized by the Canadian National Shuffleboard Association on Thursday, July 7, 2016, near Chatham, Ont. for their contribution to the sport, including hosting the first Canadian Open shuffleboard tournament in 1980.

Pictured, from left, with a plaque honouring the Tilbury, Ont. area couple, are; grandson John Carson, Henry Strong, immediate past president of the CNSA, and Glen Peltier, friend and long-time local shuffleboard player. (ELLWOOD SHREVE/THE DAILY NEWS)

Alphonse and Phoebe Marchand loved to have family and friends visit their Tilbury-area farm, and a big draw was their shuffleboard courts.

Howard Snider

From Carl Rogerson

Howard Snider

It is with great sadness to learn of the passing of Howard Snider from Wasaga, who was an avid shuffler from the Coldwater Club. He had played in several OSA tournaments, and just recently sold their place in Florida last spring. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Always a gracious and friendly player win or lose.
Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Clinton Ontario has a new shuffleboard facility.

A very interesting story submitted by Jim Corbeil –

Henry and Leida Gerrits have been hard at work along with Gerrit and Gerdien Dykman. The Gerrits have a farm just outside of Clinton Ontario and they have changed a chicken barn into a first class shuffleboard facility. They have 4 courts painted on the cement floor, with plenty of room between for social distancing do to the corona virus. They have left plenty of room and are able to add at least 4 more courts.
Marlene and I went up to have a look and play a game or two. The courts were reasonably fast and had a few drifts like most places. The facility was bright and airy and heated. They have put in a lot of work getting the place ready for shuffleboard.
Henry and Leida said, if anyone is interested in coming up or over for a game or two you are more than welcome.
Their email is gerritsleida@gmail.com Drop them an email and go and check out their courts.
It is sure nice to see just what people can do when they put their mind to it. This is what shuffleboard is all about.
Thank you Henry and Leida for your wonderful hospitality. We had a great time.
Henry and Leida are in the picture with the two of them you may not recognize them with their masks on.

Beverly Fowler is Citizen Of The Year

Beverly Fowler

We have a fellow shuffleboard player who has been just named Citizen of the Year for her charitable work in her home town of Wasaga Beach. I am sure that most Canadian Shuffleboard Players know Beverly Fowler.

Beverly has played in many ISA and Canadian Inter- Provincial tournaments and we all know her for her enthusiasm and fellowship. She has worked for many years for the Ontario Shuffleboard Association. Whenever you are at an Ontario Shuffleboard Tournament, Beverly is at the first table taking memberships and your money.

Beverly is a member of the Coldwater Shuffleboard Club. She is also a member of the Ontario Shuffleboard Association and the Canadian National Shuffleboard Association. She has been a great ambassador for the Canadian National Shuffleboard Association.

I can not say enough about Beverly. We are all very proud of her achievements.
Congratulations Beverly Fowler well deserved!

More about Ingersoll shuffling amid COVID19 precautions.

Here’s some information in addition to the previous article – https://shuffleon.org/2020/09/11/shuffleboard-at-ingersoll-senior-centre-2/-

We are using only 4 rollout courts as we leave more than six feet between the courts. We have players sign up and only 16 players are allowed in at one time. Each player goes through a questionnaire by a senior centre employee. We all wear masks and we do social distancing. No food or drinks other than bottled water. If a player can not make it that particular day we do not substitute another player in their place. We have hand sanitizer at the entrance and one person is allowed in the washroom at a time. Hand sanitizers there as well. One player draws the chips and tells the players what court to go to. Stay Safe and Healthy.

Shuffleboard at Ingersoll Senior Centre

From Jim Corbeil –

I would like to thank the Ontario Shuffleboard Association for the loan of 5 rollout courts to the Ingersoll Senior Centre. The Ingersoll arena has a banquet hall in the upper part of the building and have given shuffleboard players a place to play. This will enable players from Ingersoll London, Tillsonburg, Ancaster, Thamesford and surrounding area to play shuffleboard over the fall and winter months.
Players will be screened each time they enter the arena to play. All players will wear a mask and practice social distancing. Players may bring in bottled water, there will be NO food allowed.
Thank you to the Ingersoll seniors centre and the Ingersoll arena for their support.
Stay Safe and Healthy.
Best Regards.

Montreal group needs help – Disks and Cues

Hello,

Our neighborhood park in Montreal has an area for shuffleboard (croquet and horseshoe toss) which has been abandoned for more than 20 years. I took on the project of restoring it, so that people could come out and play – the lenght of cues is great for social distancing 😉 It is finally ready, and people are extremely enthusiastic. However, I am afraid the makeshift cues and pucks wont last…. I am writing to you in the hope that some members might have extra cues and pucks to give… They would be very welcomed and cherished !

Remembrances

We notify you that, sadly, the following players have passed on during recent years:

Jim Norton,
Basil Fick,
Evelyn Leckie.

I have searched the online obituaries and my own files for further information about our departed friends.

  • Basil Fick, dec’d February 3rd, 2017. Obituary is here. Basil had 22 OSA Expert points. On the right is a picture of Basil and Eileen Fick – from the Player Bio brochure for the 1st IP played in Coldwater 2009.

  • Evelyn Leckie dec’d December 10, 2019. Obit here. Evelyn, who had 1 OSA Expert point, will be remembered by many of us.

We want to congratulate Maureen Bryan and Bill Oostdyk on their entry to the Ontario Shuffleboard Association Hall of Fame. Bill and Maureen achieved the necessary points (35) to qualify for the OSA Hall of Fame in the player category. They have played together for several years.

They are both well deserving of this award.
Due to the corona virus this year we do not have an AGM or Tournament where we could present them with their HOF, jackets and plaques. Hopefully they will be able to make their acceptance speeches in the near future.

Two more great players join this prestigious group in the OSA Hall of Fame player category. Congratulations to Maureen Bryan and Bill Oostdyk,

Info needed about resurfacing outdoor courts.

If anyone has a suggestioni, please comment on this post or email shuffleboardbill@gmail.com.

Freda of Port Rowan as written us to say –
We are planning to resurface our outdoor concrete shuffleboard courts in Port Rowan, Ontario. Could you recommend what type of paint should be used for this purpose? It was recommended to use H & C Concrete Stain by Sherwin Williams but we could not find it on their website. Any recommendations for painting and what paint to use would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Freda has added that they have two courts

Evan made a comment that they are very keen shufflers in Port Rowan ans could really use our help. (Click on Comments below)

Shuffleboard Bill looked up the DOM Sports (our sponsor) website which has lots of useful information, although the part about paint may be out of date as provincials laws have  changed. http://www.domsports.com/pdfs/Building%20a%20Shuffleboard%20Court.PDF

Coldwater Cancels 2020 summer season.

Carole Archer, Coldwater President, had sent an email saying

“It is almost a certainty that our summer season for shuffleboard is cancelled as we were to start on the 5th of May.  So until this terrible Covid-19 has been cleared, we must stay safe and stay inside.  Take care and hope to see you all real soon.”

In talking to Carole Archer today I asked about their summer season, and she told me  that she is having to tell everyone that the Coldwater summer season is cancelled, and any further news will be announced.

More about Coldwater losses

Due to several emails coming to me at once, I missed posting the following from Carole Archer, Coldwater Club President:

“As most of you know, it is with a heavy heart that I send this email to say that we lost three of our shufflers in the last week and one in the last couple of months.  Firstly, Marilyn Graves, then Wilson Davy, Liz Fox and four days later Lyle.  It is truly a trying time for everyone and now with this Covid-19 it makes it even harder to keep in touch with everyone.  I just want everyone to know that once this virus is over, we will all get together and hopefully sooner than later.”

Centre Wellington Shuffleboard Club

From Maureen Bryan :
Centre Wellington Shuffleboard Club has played their last games of the season. We finished with our annual meeting, and a pizza party, with cake following.

We have had a great season, lots of new and exciting members take to the courts twice weekly, to our surprise have really shown their new learned skills so quickly. They have brought so much
laughter and fun, have shown alot of us old folks how to play this game we all love.
They jump in anywhere to help , ask and they do it. We are blessed to have so many new , good friends.
Until next season, Centre Wellington Shuffleboard Club sends best wishes to all clubs, take care of yourselvles, hope to see you on the courts in 2020.
Regards Maureen Bryan.

Scugog End Of Season

On Wednesday Sept 11th the Scugog Shuffle club , located in the village of Blackstock On , held their end of season meeting and potluck lunch. We started with 2 fun games of hoss collar followed by the storing of our supplies and club equipment until next May. It was then on to the meeting and a very enjoyable lunch. As the club’s membership is declining , all present were asked to spread the word wherever and whenever possible to encourage new people to join us for the fun and social interaction with the great game of shuffleboard. BLENHEIM FINISHES OFF OSA SHUFFLEBOARD SEASON – 2019

Another year of shuffleboard OSA tournaments , come to an end, as Blenheim finishes off our year, with a successful 3 days of competition in their city.

Amateurs had 17 teams, looking for more next year as Blenheim sent out many strong players who came out swinging, many ended up in the finals. Congratulations to all these players, you made your club proud, and we were glad to make new friends with you all.

The open competition had 28 teams, and this too was rewarding to see. We realize that travel can be expensive, but we also need to get out and support all of our Ontario tournaments when we can. For what the club organizers of these tournaments do for us, is true dedication for the sport, and if not supported then it will fade away. Win or lose, we take home memories, laughter, new friendships, and acquaintances, and maybe a little money . It turns into little vacation in the end. All of which is rewarding to us all.

Roger Lellam, Pres. of Blenheim, and his many club helpers, ran a very organized tournament. Have you ever thought just how many people , and hours are involved running these tournaments? Thanks for the lunches , available each day, and our tournament director, Ruth Tate, once again calmly ran the tournament without a hitch.

Muriel Burnett , our web master, had all photos of winners online in a flash. Thanks ladies, you do not go unnoticed.

Mark your calendar, Sept. 9th, Apple Tournament, St. Marys.

Regards – Maureen Bryan-sec. OSA, – Carl Rogerson-Pres. OSA.
