Thanks to Blenheim (Golden Acres Shuffleboard Club)

THANKS TO BLENHEIM- AUG. 7-9, 2018

On behalf of the OSA,  I want to thank the President of Golden Acres Shuffleboard Club, Ted Vercouteren, and Roger Kellam, Sec./Treas.,  for hosting our last OSA tournament of the year.  Their many helpers in this club did a tremendous job with the courts,  delicious lunches provided for the competitors,  and made everyone feel so welcomed.

We must thank the tournament director and her side kick,  Marlene and Jim Corbeil,  for all their work and dedication they put forward towards all our tournaments.  Marlene would love to have someone step up and learn how to be a tournament director,  and she would gladly teach them.  Please consider this.

We were also pleased to see new amateur players from Blenheim competing in this tournament, and many did extremely well.  This is a new learning experiment for them, and they showed that they are very ready for this.  We expect to see many more out next year from this club, showing support for their club, they are ready for you!

Congratulations to all participants, win or lose, it’s still a game!

I personally couldn’t attend this tournament, but reports sent to me were very positive, congratulations Golden Acres Shuffleboard Club.

Regards  Carl Rogerson –  President OSA.

New post on The Celebration Is Over! The Adventure Begins

Hubert Van Eerd Inducted Into the OSA HOF by Glen Peltier. 2018 08 08.

by stanistheman

Hubert Van Eerd is presented by Glen Peltier, AND "Pinned" by wife Cathy

QUIET, UNASSUMING, UNSELFISH, SHYS AWAY FROM RECOGNITION; all words that describe to-day’s INDUCTEE into the OSA HOF!! We are speaking of HUBERT VAN EERD!!

Hubert demonstrates these characteristics on a regular basis with regard to Shuffleboard! Whether he is south of the 49th Parallel, or North of the 49th, shuffleboard can count on Hubert, shufflers can count on Hubert!!

Glen Peltier "presented" Hubert to-day in Blenheim, and spoke about Hubert’s attributes. Hubert was "pinned" by his wife Cathy. See pic at top.

Glen has spoken highly of Hubert in the past; offering this comment on one such occasion: "I have been associated with many people that I feel have done so much for shuffleboard and get very little credit or recognition. One such person that i feel belongs on the top of the list is Hubert Van Eerd. He arranges the league at the Thames Horizon Club in Chatham, the monthly single/mingles tournament and all that goes on. He works for weeks getting the building and courts ready for play before the season starts. The most amazing thing about Hubert is he makes everyone happy and satisfied no matter what is going on. The league is on Thursday and he works till night time on Wednesday making sure everyone is paired up right. He has all the teams evenly matched to guarantee top quality play. He does the same in Florida at Sanlan Park. All the members at Chatham and at his park in Florida appreciate Hubert. Hubert is still a very good player and could of been a top pro in Florida but instead dedicated his time, so many others can enjoy the great game of shuffleboard. No words that I can write can express the amount of joy he brings to so many. We depend so much on Hubert, I hate to think of what we would do without him. Glen Peltier"

Glen speaking to-day; 2018 08 08 Most Canadian Shufflers can remember when the Thames Horizon Club (THE BARN) "shut down". Many abandoned hope that the Club would ever return. Hubert did NOT!! He loaded up all the scoreboards discs etc. and stored them at his home. He made arrangements with the city to use the Kinsman building; applied for and received a grant for ten roll out courts; contacted all the members and kept the club alive!! After several years Hubert made arrangements with the new owner of the barn, and we are now back in the barn!! This has all happened because of the determination and dedication of one very unselfish man. I am very honoured to present that man to you to-day. I give you Hubert Van Eerd, a most deserving member of the OSA Shuffleboard Hall of Fame.

Glen Peltier. 2018 08 08

Thanks to COLDWATER for CNSA Tournament

I want to thank the Coldwater Shuffleboard Club for holding the CNSA Tournament this past week. President, Carol Archer, her Executive and all the volunteers did a great job.
The Banquet was a complete success, the food was great as usual.
Coldwater will be hosting this CNSA Toutnament again next year.
Coldwater has a population of 1100 and their club has a membership well over 100. They also have a special needs group of around 20.  That tells me that they are doing somthing right.
That is why Coldwater is known as the Shuffleboard Capital of Ontario.
Clubs in larger towns and cities do not have this kind of membership.
We are looking forward to the Inter Provincial next July 7th-11th,  2019.  I am sure the Coldwater Shufffeboard Club will be up to the task.
I hope that all the Provinces will have at least one woman’s team and one man’s team.
Thanks again to the Coldwater Club for a great Toutnament.
Jim Corbeil, President CNSA.

Phil Hill

On behalf of the International Shuffleboard Association we send “Our Deepest Condolences “ to Pam and family on the passing of Phil.
When someone we love becomes a memory, that memory becomes a treasure. Phil Hill will always be remembered for his lovely smile and cheerfulness.
Those we love don’t go away.
They walk beside us everyday,
Unseen, unheard, but always near,
So loved, so missed, so dear.

Rest In Peace Dear Brother.

Biltons say “Thanks” to Coldwater

Myrna Bilton says –

Just home from the CNSA Shuffleboard Tournament at Coldwater..

Sincere “Thanks” to Coldwater Shuffleboard Club and President Carol Archer for hosting a successful tournament.
Thank you to CNSA President Jim Corbeil for his leadership and Marlene Corbeil for being the tournament director. Many thanks to the volunteers.
These events …don’t just happen!! It takes many hands who work tirelessly for the love of shuffleboard.
Coldwater will always be special to my husband Rendall and myself. We played our first tournament in 2008 at Coldwater. Don’t mistake the name Coldwater……the people are extremely warm, friendly people. It was great to see Stan McCormack, Gary & Barb Pipher, Ross Pipher, Bev Fowler, George O’Reilly and many more of our shuffleboard friends. We did a lot of reminiscing of our shuffleboard tournaments. We sure missed Bill & Lorraine Pollock. We keep Lorraine in our prayers for good health and to Bill for being her faithful caregiver.

Rendall once said “Coldwater Shuffleboard Club is the Shuffleboard Capital of Ontario”.
Thanks to Gary Pipher, George O’Reilly and helpers that put up the sign…….Rendall is very happy to see this prestigious sign.

Ingersoll – Last SM and Last Play Day

Happy-shufflerWEDNESDAY AUGUST 1st is the last Ingersoll Single/Mingles for this summer.
MONDAY AUGUST 13th is the last day of shuffleboard play this summer.

The above has been made necessary because the ice has to go in for an early start to the Curling season this year.

We will also take this opportunity to apologise for some information posted for Ingersoll club: Single/Mingles should have said “Wednesdays”, not “Mondays”. We promise to do better for next year!

Elora – The Ice Cream Affair (Again?)

Shortly after this re porter arrived on the scene within The Gorge” restaurant (known to be a favourite haunt for shufflers), Carl Rogerson, the newly elected OSA president, insisted we all end our meal with a little ice cream, with 10 spoons!. The following pictures are but a sample of the “shared fun” as the ice cream made its way around the table. (Click on a picture to enlarge it).

Shuffle Club continues to attract new Members

The Golden Acres Shuffle Club, located in Blenheim, On, continues to attract new members to the 3 year old club. To date this year, 15 new members have joined the 16 court club  bringing their full membership to 90 members as of early June. Someone new seems to arrive each week from “word of mouth” which is a credit to our existing members speaking positively about the club.  League play occurs Monday mornings and Wednesday evenings from early May until late September. 3-16 frame games are played in a jitney style which appears to favour both seasoned players and newcomers to the game and new friends are developed each week. Monday mornings are the most popular with 79 registered players however Wednesday night’s participation has increased 33% over 2017 with 48 members now registered. Wednesday night play also changes the format by alternating each week between regular play and “Hoss Collar” and “Build a House” to give some variety to players that play both days. The club is located in the Golden Acres Curling Club.

Passing of Lois McCormack

Condolences to Stan & Family

On behalf of the ISA (Myrna) and the OSA (Rendall) we send our deepest condolences to Stan and family on the passing of Lois.

Lois was well known at all levels of the shuffleboard families. From local clubs to travelling with the ISA. Lois was a “wonderful lady” and was well respected by all who knew her. We feel blessed to have known her. We will treasure the wonderful memories of our friendship and travels with Lois and Stan.

May Gods love comfort Stan and family now and always. A family is a circle of love, not broken by a loss, but made stronger by the memories.

We keep you in our thoughts and prayers

OSA Tournaments – More Locations Needed

From Mareen Bryan

2playAs in the last several years our OSA tournaments have been mainly held in southern  Ontario.  We would like to see this extended over a wider area of our province.  We now have CNSA tournaments in ingersoll and Coldwater, as well as OSA tournaments in Elora, Goderich, and Blenheim.  We know it is a commitment for a club to host these events but we would like to see a stronger shuffleboard participation, especially further east and north within the province.

Any ideas would be appreciated on how some of this could be done, please send to me, and we will read your input at the OSA Annual General Meeting June 12th, 2018, in Elora.

To all: Please forward this to your club president.
Replies may be made to OSA webmaster, Bill Boyes – shuffleboardbill@gmail.com

Thanks for your time, regards
Maureen Bryan – Secretary OSA.

Coldwater Shuffleboard

Kindly submitted by Gary Pipher~

Coldwater Shuffleboard has lost another treasured member of the Club. Eleanor Simmons passed away on April 30 at the Solders Memorial Hospital Orillia her 82nd year.Eleanor joined the Coldwater Club in 2006 and has always been a very active player and enjoyed meeting new players both at the Coldwater Club and the various other clubs where the tournaments are held throughout Ontario. Eleanor attended the winter shuffleboard round up dinner on April 10, and although she had been taking radiation treatments she was able to attend the dinner and enjoy the company of her fellow shufflers.
Many shuffleboard players will remember Eleanor and her shuffleboard partner Howard Snyder who played in many CNSA and OSA tournaments throughout Ontario.

Requested by Maureen Bryan,

OSA

Secretary.

OSA MEMBERS

AS THE AGENDA WILL BE POSTED IN MAY FOR THE OSA ANNUAL MEETING, WHICH WILL BE HELD JUNE 12 TH, 2018, AT ELORA, I HAVE ASKED THE COMMITTEE FOR THE CONSTITUTION AND BYLAWS TO REVISE AND UPDATE THIS POLICY.
IT IS NOW IN IT’S 7TH YEAR SINCE ANY UPDATES HAVE OCCURRED AND THIS SHOULD BE DONE AT LEAST EVERY 5 YEARS OR SOONER IF THERE IS ANY CHANGES TO BE MADE.

THE FOLLOWING CHANGES I WOULD LIKE TO PUT FORWARD AS I SEE THEM.

1. THE EXECUTIVE OFFICERS ARE ELECTED BY THE MEMBERS AND ARE IN CHARGE OF THE OSA. I BELIEVE THIS SHOULD BE PUT INTO SECTION IV.

3. SECTION VII AND SECTION VIII SHOULD BE TWO YEAR TERMS , NOT THREE.

4. SECTION IX- OUR FISCAL YEAR SHOULD BE APRIL 1-MARCH31ST THE FOLLOWING YEAR.

5. SECTION 11- SHOULD READ-DUES TO BE DUE APRIL 1ST OF EACH YEAR AND ARE GOOD TO MARCH OF THE FOLLOWING YEAR.

“C”, “D”, “N” Teams.

Shufflin' Bill B's avatarCNSA Shuffleboard Canada

I like it! Thanks Jim.

From Jim Corbeil:

I just thought I would tell everyone how we came up with the team letters “C”, “D”, and “N”. “CDN” is short for “Canadian”. We all are on the Canadian team.
ABC teams, players might have thought “Why am I not on the A team?”, or “Is the A team a better team than B or C?”.
