Durelle Responds

Durelle and Bish with daughter Denise Snowden

Durelle and Bish with daughter Denise Snowden

Durelle Kowacz has responded to my request for a bit more information about her daughter:

“Our daughter’s name is Denise Snowden and she has returned to her home in Edmonton, Alberta. I was so happy to have her here for this special day in my life.”

We can all appreciate Durelle’s remarks. Having our chioldren near-by brightens our hearts and lightends our steps. We hope Denise had a good trip back to Edmonton. It was Denise who drove Durelle and Bish to Nobel (and back) from their home in Demorestville, in Prince Edward County near Picton. Thank you! It was great to see Durelle and Bish at the Nobel AGM, and see her inducted into the OSA Hall Of Fame. We can only hope we will see both of you again at another tournament in beautiful P. E. Worlds First Shuffleboard from a DRONE!

Not to make too much of this BUT it was the first time!

It happened in Nobel Ontario, July 16th, 2014, and the video was shot as players took their practice shots before the Open Event. Players were informated beforehand that this would be happening. The video was taken from about 6 – 10 metres high to avoid beads being blown off the courts by the drone’s four propellers.

Technical details: The drone and camera used were included in a WL Toys model V222 package. This is really a toy “Quad-Copter” and far from professional equipment, but adequate, and fun! The video was downloaded from the camera card to a computer, edited and titles etc. added, then uploaded to YouTube. Due to limited time, no background music was added to this video.

2014 AGM – Attachment to Minutes – G. Pipher Comments re changing date of AGM.

The following is a further attachment to the minutes of the AGM. To help ensure readability of the attachment, there are two formats available.
(1) PDF – click here -> 2014-05 AGM G Pipher Comments re Changing AGM dates (rev)

(2) Embeded text – Read the following text (Due to technical issues, paragraph spacing and text colour differ from the original).

Comments re Changing the Date of the CNSA AGM

I would like to present some information to support a survey that has been circulated within the past month regarding changing the AGM of the CNSA to be held every two years at the time of the Inter Provincial Tournaments, and also what has been referred in a response as Applicant Apathy for ISA Tournaments.

I would like to begin by reading just one portion of a response because some or possibly many of you will not have heard about this.

Comments from the writer are > Quote:

A good first step in affirmative action would be to have the AGM at IP tournaments so that members across Canada can become more involved.  It goes on to say > Thankfully, this is on the AGM agenda.

More involvement should result in a broader representation on the CNSA Executive who would be able to encourage applicants to apply from all across Canada. ( End of quote)

Each year since my first involvement with the CNSA which was possibly in early 2000 there has always been representation from across Canada on the CNSA executive board. Possibly not equal but none the less they were always involved. Quite often that involvement was the result of the CNSA Presidents pushing for representation from the most active Club within the Province. That involvement by the executive has never appeared to increase the number of applicants for an ISA Tournament unless it was in their favor.

In 2007 Stan McCormack writes.   Efforts to expand the structure of the CNSA beyond Ontario have not proven successful. No Provincial Organizationoutside of ONTARIO has shown any interest in becoming an integral part of the structure as envisioned by our Objectives and Constitution.

If there are advantages to an expanded more structured organization, they are not apparent to the Alberta Shuffleboard Org; to the Saskatchewan Shuffleboard Org; or to provincial organizations which may exist in Eastern Canada.

Because the present Board acknowledged this lack of interest, at our Meeting of June 21 2007 in Tillsonburg, we passed this motion:

Motion made by Pat Lane,

“If a club or individual is not now a member of a Provincial organization; a club Membership fee be established at $50.00 per year and an individual Membership at $5.00 per year.                                                                                                                                   The Provincial fee of $150.00 to remain the same.                                                                 2nd by Stan McCormack . Motion Carried                                                                             Max and Pat to continue looking at the CNSA expansion.

Glen and Sylvia Bromley joined; and I believe a small # from New Brunswick. (Diana sent a list to each of us.)           Stan goes on to say

WE who are now serving on the Canadian Board may believe that we are acting in the best interest of All Canadian Shufflers but it is abundantly clear that shufflers in AB (our most populated province shuffler wise, after ON) do not share that view.                                                                                                           That is the easy part ~~ what to do to change that view is more difficult!!            To amend the Const. as the foremost vehicle to achieve this end, carries important risks (as does not amending).        Will we be better off with our Directors located in AB; SA; NB & ON??                 A subsequent motion was made in later years by Henry Strong at an AGM in Coldwater, to reduce the membership fee even further to $25.00 per year per club, but again that has never been successful or increased membership and has only served to reduce our Provincial membership.                                                                                                                                New Brunswick now is just a club member and pay $25.00 to the CNSA.

The Only Province outside of Ontario that has ever had a Provincial organization was New Brunswick.

And after the I/P Tournament held there in 2013 and the members meeting that followed. The result is they are no longer Provincial Members but just Club members.

I am not sure where the idea is coming from (as an individual suggests in the response to the survey) that broader representation on the Executive Board of the CNSA will encourage more applicants from across Canada to apply.

How many positions do we have on the CNSA Board that is not filled by members from other Provinces?

I would like to point out an example of this “broader representation” regarding this year’s ISA Tournament to be held in Midland Ontario.

The process to host this ISA tournament began over 3 years ago, and when the application from CNSA was accepted by the ISA board of directors; the information and the dates they selected for us were immediately published on all web sites available to the CNSA. Everyone who follows shuffleboard should have realized the dates that were chosen at that time, and all the planning that goes into hosting this International Event in Canada on Aug 10 to 15 this year.

Earlier this year when the CNSA made the announcement on the web sites to call for applications for the Midland tournament, we had a very negative comment from a Western club saying that the CNSA should have been more careful in choosing their date for the International Tournament because it was interfering with their Western tournament.

Some of their players choose not to apply and wanted to stay at home and take part in that Western tournament.

That was their choice and we must respect that; but we still had 4 applicants from the West in spite of the comment and all 4 were accepted to play to acknowledge their participation in the CNSA.

Would it have been any different if it the dates were not conflicting? (who knows)

In St Pete’s last year there were no players from the West and none applied.

Just one other thing I might to add to this; is that unless the East or the West have formed full Provincial Organizations, then how does one ever expect an individual club should run the National Organization. “The CNSA

A motion I referred to earlier was made here in this room about 3 years ago to reduce the membership fee once again in an attempt to increase Club and Provincial participation. The CNSA has handed out far more money to the various Clubs across Canada than has ever been returned in membership. And this has gone on for many years in an attempt to get them on board.                                                                                         My point here is an attempt to show you how the CNSA has tried to gain the support of other Provinces besides Ontario, but fail each and every year. .

No-one in this room understands the arm twisting that was done to get a measly $25.00 from some of the Clubs who took part in the I/P tournament held in New Brunswick last year. All to keep them in compliance with the CNSA constitution.

Some of you may recall the meeting that was held in New Brunswick during the Inter Provincial Tournament. There were motions made and recorded votes.

But who can tell me anything that transpired from that meeting.

“I can tell you it was nothing

The committees that were set up and any tasks that were assigned were soon forgotten and never carried out, AND YES some of those committee members were from outside Ontario.

In my opinion it can only get worse if the meetings are stretched out to be held every two years as proposed and if more control is passed over to non committed individuals.

The writer who responded to the survey went on to say:

Recognizing that this is a significant issue within the CNSA, it is very difficult to offer more meaningful comment without knowing how many applicants we had, where they were from and what the selection criteria was to decide who is going to represent Canada.

I believe the time is probably right to establish a committee dedicated to look into all aspects of

the applicant apathy for the ISA tournaments.

Is there in fact “Apathy” for the ISA Tournaments or plain and simple not wanting or willing to travel abroad and spend all the money it takes to be a part of these tournaments and who determined it to be a significant issue within the CNSA.

Is this the main reason for wanting the AGM switched to every two years?          Do you for one minute think the organizing of the Inter Provincial Tournaments was done by the host province??           I can tell you the answer is NO.              Do I think the I/P will continue to flourish without a lot of hard work and dedication.             In my humble opinion the answer is NO.                                                                   So then what happens to the AGM that you want to schedule every two years to be held at the I/P Tournament.                                                                               There is currently an AGM held each and every year, and every second year there is a General Members meeting held in Conjunction with the Interprovincial Tournament and this has been the case since the I/P began in 2008.                        What are you wanting to change.?

Each year an ISA selection committee is chosen by the President of the CNSA and follows the criteria which was established by the CNSA board some 6 or more years ago, and this is the basis selection process.

It is called

“Essential Qualifications

1) Demonstrated Shuffleboard Skills: 75%

2) Personal Suitability:                         25%

In order to “Qualify”, an applicant must receive 60% in each Essential Qualification. That is: if Applicant XYZ rates less than 15 in the Personal Suitability Factor, he/she will not qualify. Similarly, any applicant who is not assessed in Shuffleboard Skills at 45 or higher will not qualify.

I have been chair of the selection committee for several years, and being the chairman only means being the person selected by the President to receive the applications / record the votes as provided by the selection committee and then send replies to all applicants either by postal mail or the internet or by phone. There were over 55 applicants and 24 places for them this year, so there were a lot of disappointed applicants. But also a lot of work sending out notices and replies.   The names of the selection committee have never been made public to the best of my knowledge, since they began the ISA player selection process. All for the simple reason that if an individual was not selected to play, their reason is always because he or she on the selection committee did not like me and that only creates sour grapes.

Gary Pipher, May 27, 2014.

The OSA Trailer – A Report from Gary Pipher

The OSA trailer is an important resource for shuffleboard in Ontario, because it carries (or can carry) up to 20 roll-out courts, court dividers,  scoreboards, and all the supplies and equipment necessary to setup a shuffleboard tournament. Just think of the International tournament to be held in the Midland Arena, August 11 – 18 this summer. OSA to the rescue, to supply and transport in their new trailer, all the courts and equipment required.

Gary Pipher has (once again) risen to a shuffleboard challenge, this time getting the old trailer replaced as well as significanly upgraded! “Well Done” Gary.

I sincerely want to thank President George O’Reilly and the Coldwater Shuffleboard Club for hosting the CNSA Tournament that was held May 27th – 29th 2014. They have hosted this event for several years and they still welcome us with warm smiles and hugs. They spoil us with their delicious homemade soup, sandwiches and sweeties. For many of us that took our campers we appreciate the opportunity to camp behind their building.

Thanks to Barb Pipher for organizing another great Banquet.

Help Needed for Start Up

John Mickle is looking for help with some equipment and supplies in order to get shuffleboard re-started in Ancaster Ontario. He writes the following:
“I am an active shuffleboard player in the South-West District of Florida and in Ontario.  I reside in Ancaster, Ontario and am actively trying to re-introduce shuffleboard to our Senior Centre.  I state re-introduce because it has been tried once.  We have three well laid out courts on a vinyl, auditorium floor.  “
“In order to get started, we require some equipment upgrades.  The discs in inventory are similar to ones that I have seen at the Shuffleboard Museum in Clearwater, Florida.  Money is in short supply because no one is sure if any current members will sign up to play the game.  I feel strongly that if the game becomes popular, monies will be forthcoming.  In the meantime, we are wondering if any club in Ontario might have recently upgraded  their supply of cues, discs or chalk boards and may be willing to donate or sell their used equipment which is in good work working order.  Our pressing need is for three sets of decent discs of modern vintage.”
“Please contact John Mickle if you can assist. . . bernzieandjohn@yahoo.com. . . . . Thank you”

Wellington Centre – Elora

Sent in by Maureen Bryan –

Wellington Centre- ELORA have opened their doors, May 8th, 2014, for another season of Shuffleboard. With our dedicated helpers , 15 courts were placed in position , ready for play, along with carpets laid and taped, and beaded. All these things do take time and planning but all was accomplished in 40 minutes. What a great crew!
We had 36 players for opening night and a few new players joined in. Always nice to give hugs to all our friends after a long winter, and then have a few games of shuffle .
All enjoyed a coffee and cake following the games. Our club is  looking forward to hosting our first OSA tournament June 10-11-12. Do hope to see you all there, we need everyone’s support to make it a success.
Our regular play is Mondays at 1PM, and Thursday at 7 PM. We serve drinks and dessert following play and have chit-chat amongst players. Do come out and join in the fun. You are most welcome. Cost $ 2.50.

CNSA Reminder, and a bit of OSA History

Just a quick reminder of the CNSA Doubles coming up May 27-29. Always a lot of fun, including the Banquet. Don’t miss out! More information is at http://theshufflersnews.wordpress.com/events/2014-2/http://theshufflersnews.wordpress.com/events/2014-2/..

The History: I ran across an old (October 1991) copy of The Ontario Shuffler in my “files”. See if you recognize any of the names of the tournament winners! Overall, that newsletter did a great job, and reading between the lines, illustrates the work that the OSA folks were putting into shuffleboard. I’m so glad they did! Historical notes abound!

NOTE: If the words appear too small to read, you can zoom in by using your keyboard: Press the CTRL key down and also press the “+” key – repeat as necessary. Use CTRL and “-” to go smaller again. Do the same thing by using the CTRL key and your mouse wheel.

Cheers!

2014 Shuffleboard Fun in Ontario

As we look out our windows, we can see Spring in the air. Or maybe March coming in like a lion. It must be time to mark our calenders with the 2014 shuffleboard events! Even the Ontario Snowbirds down Florida and Arizona etc. are complaining about the cool and rainy weather, and are definitely hoping Spring comes “home” before they “fly” back up North – for many of us, less than a month away!

On the bright side: The 2014 Ontario Tournaments and other events have been posted on this website. Click here -> 2014 Events and Results. The first one is the Canadian National Shuffleboard Association Doubles tournament in Coldwater May 27-29. The the important CNSA Annual General Meeting and excellent banquet will be after shuffling on the 27th. More details will be announced.

Events and Results for 2014 or other years are always available via the “Black Bar” menu at the top of the page. Just rest your cursor over Events and Results and then click on an item in the resulting drop down list. Archives are available on request.

Christmas Greetings from the Bilton’s

xmastreeAs you gather with your family and friends over the holidays, let’s be thankful for our many blessings. We pray that strength and courage abundant be given to all

who work for a world of reason and understanding. Help us to remember if every day were Christmas – everyone would take the time to be a little kinder, and to be a little more patient with one another. If every day were Christmas there would be more hand-holding, more hugging, more harmony in our voices, and joy would surround us all like a blanket of hope.

May the true spirit of this Christmas Season, its joy, its beauty, its hope, and above all, its abiding faith, may be among us. That the blessings of peace be ours, the peace to build and grow, to live in harmony and sympathy with others, and to plan for the future with confidence.

The things we truly cherish still come in priceless events. As long as we can enjoy the laughter of a small child, the warm hug of a loved one, and the satisfaction that comes from a life filled with purpose, we can feel grateful.

We want to wish all our Shuffleboard Friends and their Families a MERRY
CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR filled with good health. We treasure the
many friendships that we have made from around the world. May your hearts be filled with warmth and love.

Hugs
Rendall & Myrna

Shuffleboard Lessons

Eric Brown (Thedford) reminds us that the Zephyrhills Shuffleboard Club website carries instructional articles by Lary Faris. Here’s the link.

Lary’s Sept 30 article is called "Duck Hunting" and deals with a situation near the end of a game, and whether Yellow with the hammer, should use their 3rd disk to shoot a double to score 18 points, or try to kitchen a Black "sitting duck" on the 7-10-off line. Yellow is behind 51 to 66, and black already has a seven hidden behind a Tampa..Lary always provides a detailed analysis, and a very helpful diagram.

Rendall Bilton, OSA President

Dear Ontario Shufflers

I would like to thank the OSA Board for their support and helping me with a very busy year. A special thanks to the two most important women of my year – my secretary Maureen Bryan and my wife Myrna.  I want to thank Picton, Kincardine and Nobel for hosting successful tournaments. I appreciate and thank the Tournament Directors. Thanks to Gary Pipher for storing the OSA trailer. It’s the dedication of all these people that make shuffleboard a fun sport to play.

I want to congratulate all the players who took part in the 3rd Interprovincial Tournament that took place in Dieppe NB.  I was pleased and honoured to present George O’Reilly, Bill & Lorraine Pollock their awards to be inducted into the OSA Hall of Fame. I appreciate their support and shuffleboard knowledge.

I thank all of you who attended the OSA Tournaments. It takes your attendance to make a successful tournament. Goderich and Centre Wellington (Elora) will be hosting their first tournaments in 2014.   I look forward to seeing you next summer.

The attached photo -Southwest Regional (55 +) Games held in District 29 at Delaware Ontario, Wed. Aug. 14, 2013:

*In the front row – Ron and Dianne Carradine (St.Marys) winners, 2nd place Silver medals.
* In the back row – Ron Ferguson and George Holroyd (St.Marys) winners, the 1st place Gold medals.
* In third place (not shown) were (??) ” 2 gentlemen ” from Windsor area won the Bronze.
Thanks “R”.

ps/ – *** You will probably get the word “officially” from Thedford.
At the recent Thedford Apple Tournament, on Monday Sept. 23rd. – Suzanne Sharp (St.Marys) and Eric Brown (Grand Bend) won the main event. Their prize was a bushel of apples, and get their names on the trophy. I think they said – “this was the 28th year for this tournament.”

Glass Beads

Eric Brown has found a supplier of glass beads as follows below.
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
From: eandbbrown@hay.net
I don’t where every club gets their # 4 glass beads ,but I have found a supplier that is local.
The company is GCR ( Glavin Coating & Refinishing) 72823 Parr Line , R.R.#1 Zurich,Ontario N0M2T0
Attention Mike Glavin 519-236-4022 e-mail mglavin
They are located between Hensal and Zurich

GCR do sandblasting and orders a transport load of beads per month in the summer, they do not use the # 4 glass beads used for shuffling but can order them.
The cost of a 50 lb bag of beads is $ 35.00 cash
This summer I ordered 6 bags and had them within 2 days

Hope this helps anyone wanting beads
Eric Brown

Thanks Eric, for sharing your helpful information. That seems a good price.

Bill Boyes comments:
Zurich is near the shores of Lake Huron, so those in central or eastern Ontario might try a more local coating and refinishing business. As well, your own municipality may be using beads in reflective paint for roadways.

Is anyone using #6 beads? Are #6 bigger than #4?
Please make your own comments below.

The Renfrew club information …

THE RENFREW Champlain Seniors. (164 Argyle St. Renfrew)

We are called the Champlain Seniors, and our group includes shuffleboard players and Euchre players.  We shuffle at the Air Force Association Bldg. 164 Argyle St., Renfrew, ON K7V 4A3, every Tuesday beginning at 13:00, (one o’clock!). Shuffling takes place in this same location ALL YEAR ROUND, winter and summer.

There is good competition at our club: Some of us go to the Renfrew County Senior Games, and in the past few years, have bought home medals most of the time.  We have on two occasions, competed in the Eastern Ontario Senior Games, in Shuffleboard.  Previously we got the Gold Medal at Smith Falls, and also we played at Cornwall.

We are always trying to recruit new players to our shuffleboard group, and it has been growing over the past couple of years.

OSA Hall Of Fame additions

OSA-HOFYes you have probably seen the earlier postings about HOF inductions for George O’Reilly and Lorraine and Bill Pollock. We now have links included in the HOF page (Click Hall Of Fame on the black-bar menu above). When you are there click on an underlined  name and see the remarks and pictures taken when that person was inducted.

We have the pictures and words for this year’s inductions. Now we are looking for more pictures and copies of speeches made on past  occasions, so, PLEASE, if you can dig any OSA HOF material, let us know through Rendall Bilton (myrna.bilton@sympatico.ca) or Bill Boyes (shuffleboardbill@gmail.com).

Ontario Shuffleboard clubs and activities

Subject:
OSA note

The OSA is promoting our game of shuffleboard in many ways. This year at our annual meeting, we proposed to try and inform those clubs who are not on our emailing list , be informed of the upcoming OSA tournaments in Ontario. Many shufflers do not know of the information out there so we are suggesting that if anyone is aware of shufflers in your area, shuffling in centres like senior buildings, or in other facilities, and have a president or contact of their own, please forward any information with emails or phone numbers of a contact to Carl Rogerson. He is attempting to contact as many areas as possible, anywhere in Ontario, to help promote our game of shuffle.
There are many places OSA has never heard of and you may not know we exist either, but we are certainly interested in you. Send any information to (suerogerson5248@gmail.com) this will reach Carl. We will send out our information with the upcoming tournaments for 2014. Happy shuffling! Respectfully Maureen Bryan ( sec. OSA )
