Ontario Shuffleboard News and Information

This tournament is being done differently due to the limited number of courts. Amateurs will play on Monday, May 22. Amateur finals will be Tuesday. Experts will play on Wednesday, May 24. Expert finals will be Thursday.

It is still an “any-doubles” tournament just like we’ve always had. That is, teams can be two ladies, two men, or one of each. Teams will play together throughout their respective tournaments. Because of the court restriction, I cannot have anybody play in both tournaments. Amateurs can play in the expert tournament IF their partner is an expert and they did NOT play in the amateur tournament.

The first day of each tournament will be a “modified singles/mingles for doubles” tournament. This means there will be chips drawn for court assignments and you will play the other team at that court. Although not likely, it is conceivable you could hit a team or court more than once. I will be controlling the byes so that they are distributed evenly (depending on the number of teams).

Depending on the number of teams, I suspect we will be playing a 16 or 24 frame game. It will NOT be best of three. Nobody will be eliminated on the first day of their tournament. I’m hoping everybody plays five games throughout the day and that we finish by 4:30pm.

The finals day for the top eight teams will be like our traditional tournaments. The top four teams will play for first through fourth in main while the fifth through eighth place teams will play for consolation placement.

Do NOT forget to bring a lunch. There is nothing close to the venue.

PLEASE drive slowly on the driveway leading to the venue. The owner of the farm has small children. He is not a shuffler but he is kind enough to allow us to use his facilities. Being respectful is the least we can do.

Our first OSA tournament for the 2023 season is fast approaching. Woohoo!!!

For those of you who have not played on real courts, you are in for a real treat. There are eight courts that can compete with any around the world. This venue sits on the edge of the Thames River on a private farm. And before I forget, if you do attend this tournament, please drive slowly and carefully down the driveway. The owner of the farm graciously lets the local club play on his property, even though he is not a shuffler. They have small children. We do not want to put any of them in danger … nor stir up a lot of dust as it’s near his home.

Because of the court count, we’ll be running this tournament a bit differently than others. For starters, amateur teams will play a singles/mingles format on Monday (May 22). Teams will play all day, albeit shorter games. Registration will be 8:00am to 8:30am and we’ll start playing at 9:00am. We will finish before 4:30pm. There will be a common lunch break and you must bring your lunches. There is nothing nearby.

The top eight teams will come back on Tuesday (May 23) for a traditional finals day to determine 1st thru 4th in Main and 1st thru 4th in Consolation.

Experts will follow the same format starting on Wednesday (May 24) with the finalist playing on Thursday (May 25). Because of the court count, amateur teams cannot play in the expert tournament. If you are an amateur, and you play with an expert, we’ll let you enter into the expert tournament. Under no circumstances can you play in both tournaments … this time. I don’t have the courts to do this.

Depending on the number of teams that register, you could play between 4 and 6 games on the first day of your respective tournament. Byes will be evenly distributed throughout the day. On the first day of each tournament, we are only playing one game matches … not the best of three. I’ll be bringing every chart combination with me so that we can maximize the amount of play on the first day of each tournament without over doing it.

OSA memberships can be purchased at the venue prior to registering for the tournament.

It is with much sadness that I share the news of the passing of Carl Rogerson on September 16. He is one of the finest gentlemen I have ever met. I know the whole shuffleboard community will mourn his loss and we all pass on our condolences to his wife of 70 years, Ella, and their whole family.

Carl’s induction into the Ontario Shuffleboard Association Hall of Fame was conducted at the OSA AGM held in Elora Ontario by new OSA president Evan Engell, June 14, 2022. Evan spoke about Carl’s history as president from June 2018 to June 2022, made more difficult because of Covid which shut down Ontario shuffleboard events and OSA activities until 2022. Evan talked about Carl’s leadership and presence helping us get through that difficult time.    

It was following several years of service as an OSA board member that Carl was elected president (June 2018), a position he has held to the OSA AGM in June 2022. Carl was noted for his steady leadership style. Living in North Bay Carl would have to drive for hours to play in OSA tournaments in southern Ontario. With his bride Ella by his side, he would often be picking up shuffleboard equipment for others and he sometimes combined such a trip with his travels conducting his container business activities. Carl also obtained a container for use by the Coldwater Shuffleboard Club for storing equipment.  A very busy man!

On the courts, Carl is well known for his white western hat and dapper curled moustache, AND for being a formidable opponent! Carl began  playing in Florida in the early 1990’s and made PRO in 2007. In Ontario Carl has played mostly with George Admiral as his partner, making a very strong team indeed!

Evan remembered the first time he met Carl.  Evan’s Dad was a Clearwater player and Carl had so many nice things to say about Wayne.  It formed an impression on Evan that he will never forget.  Carl’s efforts with the “Saturday” league in Clearwater, demonstrated his true love of shuffleboard.  Evan pointed out that the testament to a true sportsman is his actions off the courts.  Absolutely nobody is more loved than Carl both on and off the courts.

Blenheim AMATEUR Tournament – August 2

The format of the tournament will change so that amateur teams will play five or six games. The tournament will start at 9:00 and finish at 4:00 with a proper lunch break at noon. You will not be out of the tournament if you lose. You will play all day and the tournament will finish in one day.

Don’t forget, AMATEURS are able to and welcome to compete in the Open Tournament on day two. Nothing is more fun than taking down an "Expert" team. 🙂

Please let your shuffleboard friends know about this. It will make the trip to Blenheim even more fun.

Save your “accommodation” receipts this year. Ontario residents can claim 20% of their 2022 accommodation expenses (ex. hotel, cottage, or campground) on their 2022 tax return.  You can claim up to $1,000 as an individual, or $2,000 as a couple, and receive a refundable tax credit of $200 or $400 respectively.

Google it for specifics but, generally speaking, accomodation expenses while shuffling qualify for the staycation tax credit.   .

OSA Tournament Director Evan Engell says “If you have ever been a State Amateur or Expert in any other country or jurisdiction, you are not eligible to play in the Amateur division of an OSA tournament; you are eligible to play in the Open division.

Congratulations to Carolyn Coulombe who should have been credited with finishing the Elora Amateur tournament in 3rd place Consolation. She had played in place of Norm Lindsay whose very sore arm prevented him from continuing in the tournament.

It is my honour and gives me great pleasure to nominate John & Lenore Holder to the Ontario Shuffleboard Association Hall of Fame for the “Special Awards Category”.

In 2003 John & Lenore retired from dairy farming and moved to Pine Meadows Retirement Community. This is where they were introduced to shuffleboard. The Holders have always been involved in the communities where they have lived so it didn’t take them long to get involved with the shuffleboard and running the club. That same year they decided to be snowbirds and bought a home in Florida where they continued to play shuffleboard.

The Holders have participated in many OSA and CNSA tournaments. They have represented Ontario in 4 Interprovincial Tournaments. In 2011 – Innisfail, Alta, 2013 – Dieppe, NB, 2015 – Goderich, Ont & 2017 – Moose Jaw, Sask.

John & Lenore represented Canada in 3 ISA tournaments. In 2012 at Seattle, WA, 2013 at St Petersburg, FL & 2014 at Midland, Ontario. The Holders were on the planning committee and played a big role at the Midland ISA tournament to make it a successful and memorable event. Lenore designed and made the lovely flag arrangements for the banquet tables.

The Holders played in many tournaments in Florida with both of them achieving pro status. They played on 2 teams from their Lazy Days Park. John became the first Canadian President of the Lee County Shuffleboard Club and Lenore was a board member there with many duties.

In 2015 John & Lenore represented Canada at the first major UK competition at the Norwich Open tournament where again they made new friends. Another highlight of the Holders shuffleboard journey was taking the Rocky Mountaineer train from Vancouver to Calgary. Rendall and I shared this trip with them….wonderful memories.

In 2009, John & Lenore were co-founders of the Centre Wellington Shuffleboard Club. Countless hours of dedicated work and planning was put into this new club. The Centre Wellington Shuffleboard Club held its first OSA tournament in 2014. That was always a wish for John.

The backbone of any organization is determined by people who work for it and the Holders have set a shining example of that. The club is what it is today because of the effects of people like you.

John & Lenore say “They are extremely proud and thankful for the opportunity of meeting and working with many kind and friendly friends”.

I am pleased to recognize all the contributions that John & Lenore have made to shuffleboard. On behave of Rendall, I am honoured to present the OSA Hall of Fame, special awards to them today.

John and Lenore are most deserving of this award.

Everyone is invited to the OSA Shuffleboard Doubles tournament July 5th to 7th.

The AMATEUR starts July 5 with the finals on July 6th.
The OPEN (Experts and Amateurs) starts July 6th with the finals on July 7th.
Please plan for both days, but if there are a low number of entries then the tournament may require only one day.

There will be a “Shuffleboard Social” (Happy Hour) on the first day of the tournament – July 5th from about 4 – 6 PM. There will be finger foods and a cash-bar available. This event replaces the usual banquet due to the loss of our caterer Larry Lalonde, and the high cost of other providers.

Marlene was introduced to shuffleboard in Frostproof, Florida in 2010. At first she wasn’t keen on the game but her husband Jim really liked it. After a few months playing in Florida and Ontario, Marlene began playing in tournaments.

In 2011 she was asked to play in the first interprovincial tournament , which was held in Innisfail, Alberta. Since then Marlene played in 3 other interprovincial tournaments, one in Dieppe in 2013, Goodrich in 2015, and Moose Jaw in 2017. She also was director for the one held in Ingersoll, in 2019 , but unfortunately on the day of play Marlene became very ill and we nearly lost her. With the grace of God and great doctors she fought back. She then was the director for the 6th Interprovincial, held in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, in 2021 , when things opened up somewhat after the lockdown with Covid-19.

In the meantime , Marlene also played , representing Canada, in 6 international shuffleboard tournaments which consisted travelling to st. Petersburg, Florida in 2013; Midland in 2014; Clearwater, Florida in 2015, where she placed in the top 15; St. Cloud, Florida in 2016, Brazil in 2017 were she placed in the top 4; and then High River, Alberta in 2018.

In 2014, Lorraine Pollock , tournament director at the time, approached Marlene, to see if she would take over being a tournament director. She thought since her husband wanted to play in the tournaments, she could be there still involved in the games. Lorraine stepped down and Marlene stepped into the position as tournament director of the OSA and CNSA tournaments from 2015-2021.
She has served on several board positions over the years, CNSA board of directors, OSA rules committee and Hall Of Fame chairperson , she also helped her husband , Jim when he was the CNSA president.

Marlene was president of Winter Haven, Florida Shuffleboard Club for 5 years. Working along side of the Winter Haven City, she managed to have 24 courts, resurfaced and painted. She then organized and directed Central District park amateur team championships , for 7 years. There were 15 parks entered in each tournament. Marlene was also curator for the Hall Of Fame in Winter Haven, Florida as well as director for the Hall Of Fame Classic Tournament for 6 years.

As well as directing tournaments , Marlene also ran monthly single mingles for Ingersoll, St Mary’s, and London’s shuffleboard clubs. She also ran the annual Apple Tournament for Southern Ontario .
Marlene has been a great inspiration for new players and has gone out of her way to teach and assist in any way she could.

Marlene is a very accomplished shuffler herself, and a caring and well respected ambassador for the game of shuffleboard, here at home , as well as abroad.

It is my privilege to introduce our friend and fellow shuffler, as she is inducted into the Ontario Shuffleboard Association , Hall Of Fame, Marlene Corbeil.

We are going to work on hosting several next year once we can work out the details.

The OSGA 55 + District 16 shuffleboard competition was held on May 10 at our facilities.. Two of our teams made it to the last four. The winners were:

The OSA would like to extend  congratulations and best wishes to President Carl Rogerson and his First Lady Ella, on their 70th wedding anniversary, April 19th, 2022.

About Carl and Ella as sent to us by their daughter, Sue Rogerson:

Carl and Ella Rogerson were married in Alliston, Ontario on April 19th 1952. At the time Carl was working on the railway and Mom was working the boats through the locks in Coldwater, ON.
Shortly after they were married they moved to MacTier, ON as Dad continued to work on the railway their first child was then born in Parry Sound, On. A short time later they moved to North Bay, ON where Dad continued to work on the railway.

In 1957 Carl bought his first home and opened his own business in the garage at the back of the home. That business was a repair business of acetylene torches and regulators. He stayed there for a number of years and then relocated into a large building where he then sold oxygen, acetylene, and all kinds of associated parts. That business was sold and he went into eighteen wheelers hauling all over North America, at one time he had at least 20 rigs in the fleet.

Over the 70 years of marriage they have raised six children: 3 boys and 3 girls. Unfortunately they just lost their youngest daughter in March. The rest of the family are doing well. They have 10 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Dad has spent the last 40 years in the sea-container business, selling, renting, delivering and to this day is still selling, renting and delivering containers. Thirty years ago they began to go to Florida in the winters and that is where he was introduced to the game of Shuffleboard reaching his Pro status.

Webmasters Note: Following several years of service on the OSA board, Carl was elected president in June 2018, a position he has held since. On the courts, Carl is well known for his white western hat and dapper curled moustache, AND for being a formidable opponent! (Great as a partner of course!).

Schedule – League play- Monday’s starting at 9:00 am & Wednesday’s starting @ 6:30 pm

Season – From early May until mid-September

Play – League play is jitney style (3-4 16 frame games) .

Cost – Seasonal fee $60.00 (for 1 day) or $100.00 (for both days). Per use fee is $5.00. Free parking.

To All, 

At this time, the CNSA will not be able to select the members that have applied for the ISA tournament in August. On March 6^th there is an ISA meeting scheduled. After that, the selection committee will be able to make a more informed decision on team selection. I hope that the selection committee will then have the necessary information to finish the team selection. This should be done by the 8th of March. 

I would like you to please inform your provincial members of the changes.

As it is noted we have lost our long time tournament director, Marlene Corbeil, as she has retired from this position.
We are now looking to train new people for this position, and have someone that will do this for us. Please reply to me if you are interested, and I would like to see at least a few to help out . We would start out learning on a paper format, and we will arrange a class in early spring. Please don’t be afraid to try , we can’t run a tournament without a director. I hope I get lots of interest.

Coldwater dates correction.

Note: All tournaments are played under ISA rules. Format is Doubles so you need a partner – No Partner? – See the Partner Needed page.. Amateurs may play in an Open tournament. Please see Tournament Notes and About OSA Tournaments.

Amateurs should plan for two to three days at our tournaments. ALSO you may play in both the Amateur AND the Open IF …:
Amateur tournaments start on a Tuesday (but not the Ingersoll CNSA), and if participation is high, finals have to be played on the next day. If you are an Amateur you should plan for at least two days because you might have to play in the final rounds on the second day (You have skillfully won your way into the finals and your tournament did not complete on the first day.) Otherwise, you got knocked out of the Amateur tournament on the first day (lost twice) so you are free to play in the Open (starts 2nd day), AND you might even advance to play in the Open finals on day 3!

OSA members send best wishes to Ella Rogerson, wife of President Carl Rogerson, for her 90th birthday, what a milestone!

Almost ALL of our shuffleboard games in Ontario and Canada are commonly limited to short, 12 or 16 frames. Tournaments are played according to ISA rules which specify a game to be 16 frames. A different strategy is needed compared to the 75-point games in Florida etc. Take note that these tips, even if you NEVER play 75-po9int games, will help you WIN!

The following is fun information and tips, content originated by the great Lary Feris, are taken from the Zephyrhills Shuffleboard Club website – .

• If you are playing yellow, it’s important to try to keep from getting behind by more than one score at the end of the 10th frame, so you can possibly win by scoring with your last two hammers.
• If you are playing black, you should try to get out to a big lead with your first two hammers and try to maintain a two block lead or better through your last hammers (9th & 10th frames).
• Because game points are recorded, tacking on score when you are safely ahead is preferred to clearing. Snuggling can be a good tactic for adding on score, especially when you have the hammer. Snuggling eights is a good choice with less chance of being “kitchened”.
  (Ed. Note: It is unusual to record game points in Ontario. If you are ahead, don’t take the risk of losing by kitchening yourself with your last shot)
• Covering ten-offs is also a good tactic in these short frame games, especially if you are behind and you need to get your opponent going in the wrong direction. At the very least it can kill a frame and possibly cause a lost hammer.

Many of us knew Al Wilson and we send our condolences to his wife Barb and their family. Al died of cancer September 20th. Al was a well known shuffler in Ontario,having been president of the Scugog Shuffleboard Club for a number of years. Al and wife Barb were also well known in Florida where AL played and was a tournament director for a shuffleboard league in Fort Myers, where Al and Barb vacationed together for 20 winters.

Blenheim’s Golden Acres Shuffle Club started up their shuffleboard program the week of July 19 as a result of the Province’s move to Step 3. Our first week saw 72 members register to play over the next 9 weeks. The club had to spread out game days over 2 days (Monday & Tuesday mornings) to handle all registrants to ensure social distancing was maintained at all times. In addition, a Wednesday night program will also be provided.

The OSA wish to extend our heart felt condolences to Rose Irwin and family, in the loss of Jim Irwin.

Many of the Ontario shufflers will remember both Rose and Jim, and over the years we have had the opportunity to know them both. They have been very instrumental in promoting shuffleboard, and known to be such fun players.

Prayers from all of us who knew this lovely couple.

Jim will be remembered as a friend and a gentleman.

I have contacted Coldwater, Goderich ,Elora and Blenheim shuffleboard clubs for season 2021 OSA tournaments.We have all agreed that due to the Covid-19 virus, that this season of shuffleboard is cancelled. Lets hope this finds all our members in good health and getting or about to get our vaccinations soon. I know we will all miss the sport and the friendships we make. It is with great sadness to learn of the passing of Howard Snider from Wasaga, who was an avid shuffler from the Coldwater Club. He had played in several OSA tournaments, and just recently sold their place in Florida last spring. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Always a gracious and friendly player win or lose.
